*Transported to the world of logistics!* Rotary Club of Pune Pride organized field trip on 12th November to the JN port located at Nhava Sheva near Panvel, Mumbai was not only packed with information but loaded with insights into the world of logistics. It was ‘out of the box’ thinking on part of President Ujwal Kele to plan a trip to the container port. 35 participants were exposed for the first time to the operational side of the supply chain, even though many have been importing / exporting for all their lives. The immense expanse, the mammoth machinery and the huge scale of operations was eye popping. As if the various new terms like draft, wharf, quay, gantry, rail mounted cranes, etc all were not crazy enough, the group also had to imbibe new acronyms like CFS, CHA, ICD and SMTP. The gang (also referred to the group of labor working in port or on ship) of visitors was introduced to different types of cargoes and the necessity to use different types of ships and containers for each type of cargo. The equipment used to handle the containers like reach stackers & straddle carriers were impressive. The visit to ICTPL’s Globicon CFS (Container Freight Station) including their container yard & warehousing operations was another hand’s on learning experience. It is heartening to know that the CFS is designed, constructed being operated using Green technologies. Overall this was mesmerizing and fulfilling industrial trip for the RCPP members.
